Power the Future Overview
PTF collage

Power the Future was announced in September 2000 as a comprehensive approach to address electricity supply and reliability issues for We Energies' customers in a way that considers both the economy and the environment.

Power the Future expands power production to meet growing demand, improves existing power plants for increased efficiency and reduced emissions, and upgrades power delivery to help keep the lights on.

  • Expanded Power Production: Coal-based generating units at Port Washington Power Plant are being replaced with two natural-gas-based units, and two additional coal-based units are under construction at the Oak Creek expansion project. The new generation will be added in phases through the year 2010. When completed, We Energies’ total generation would expand from about 6,000 megawatts today to approximately 8,300 megawatts.
  • Improved Power Plants: Power the Future also includes investing in existing power plants to improve efficiency and environmental controls. These improvements will contribute to an overall reduction in emissions and increase in electricity production.
  • Upgraded Delivery System: Investments are also being made in We Energies' power delivery system to better meet the needs of an increasingly digital society.
  • Increased Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency: Programs to use wind, solar and biomass renewable energy sources are continuing to expand, and additional efforts are planned to improve customers' efficient use of energy. In May 2008, the Blue Sky Green Field Energy Center was placed into commercial operation. Learn more about Blue Sky Green Field.
