America Has Centuries of Coal. It’s Time to Use It.
A new report from the U.S. Geological Survey confirms what energy advocates have long known: America holds a vast coal supply. According to the report, the coal resources beneath federally managed public lands could power the nation for at least 600 years. With 356 billion short tons of available coal resources and an additional 4.2 billion short tons of reserves linked to active mines, the United States has more than enough fuel to meet increasing electricity needs for generations.
This comes as the country faces an urgent need for reliable, affordable electricity. Dependable energy sources are more important than ever, and coal remains a critical part of that equation.
The report also emphasizes Wyoming’s crucial role in America’s energy future. The state contains 87 percent of the coal reserves linked to active mines on federal land, making efforts to eliminate unnecessary barriers to production even more important.
That’s why Rep. Harriet Hageman’s work to modernize coal leasing in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin deserves praise. H.R. 7872 would eliminate outdated financial hurdles that discourage new leasing while helping ensure a stable supply of one of America’s most reliable energy resources.
For too long, misguided policies have dismissed coal. America has centuries of coal underground, and as electricity demand grows, responsibly using these resources can help keep the lights on, boost energy security, and shield families from higher energy costs.
