PTF Leads Charge to Overturn California’s EV Mandate

In our 2025 Energy Policy Roadmap released in January, we warned that California’s extreme EV mandates were a threat to energy affordability and consumer choice. Now, just weeks later, the Wall Street Journal’s editorial board is echoing our call to overturn this disastrous policy.

“The GOP can rescue the country from onerous rules that are impossible for auto makers to meet.”  Wall Street Journal Editorial Board, Feb. 17, 2025

At its core, California’s EV mandates are government overreach on steroids. The Biden administration handed the state an EPA waiver that lets it dictate what kind of cars Americans can buy, forcing auto manufacturers into an “unaccountable, unachievable regulatory wormhole.” This isn’t just about California. A dozen other states have tied themselves to this policy, meaning nearly half the country is being forced into an EV agenda they didn’t vote for.

Thankfully, President Trump and EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin are fighting back. On Friday, Zeldin submitted California’s EV waiver to Congress for repeal under the Congressional Review Act (CRA), a move we laid out in our Energy Policy Roadmap.

Overturning this policy would be a tremendous win for consumers. The EV mandates were already failing spectacularly, with EVs making up just 13% of new car sales in California, 8% in Massachusetts, and a dismal 6% in New York. Yet, automakers were being forced to meet 43% EV sales quotas by 2027. That math doesn’t add up, and it makes clear that these progressive policies truly are a mandate after all.

With Congress now hopefully stepping in to overturn this mandate, America can restore common sense, protect auto jobs, and keep costs down for working families. Power The Future has been proud to lead the way in identifying and calling out dangerous, anti-consumer, and anti-energy worker policy. Power The Future will continue to be a resource, but now, it’s time to finish the job and put California’s EV delusion to rest for good.
