China’s Rare Earth Weapon

Power The Future has issued multiple reports warning that America’s reliance on China for rare-earth minerals is one of the most serious threats to our national security. Our 2020 study, The Fight for Rare Earths: How Green Extremists Ignore China’s Human Rights Record and Threaten U.S. National Security, highlighted the potential for China to cut off our supply of rare earths at any time and the security risks involved.

And now, China is already getting ready to do just that.

The New York Post reports,

“China is reportedly crafting a plan to block the US military from getting shipments of rare earth magnets – even as it eases restrictions on shipments to US companies making electronics and other consumer goods. Beijing has repeatedly used its near-monopoly over rare earth metals – crucial to make everything from iPhones to military hardware like F-35 fighter jets and drones – in tense tariff talks with the Trump administration. Beijing is planning a “validated end-user” system that fast-track shipments for approved civilian firms in the US, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources familiar with the plan. It would allow China’s President Xi Jinping to keep his promise to President Trump about easing exports while cutting out military contractors.”

Rare earth elements are essential. They power many devices, from smartphones to medical tools and military equipment. China controls 70% of global rare earth mining and about 90% of processing, giving the Chinese Communist Party significant influence over America’s economy and security.

The eco-Left recognizes China’s dominance but refuses to back U.S. mining efforts that could reduce it. President Trump and his administration have taken this issue seriously, launching efforts to boost domestic rare-earth production and find new sources in allied nations. America can’t afford to let China control the materials that power both our energy future and our military readiness.
