Climate Lawsuits Against American Energy Have Gone Too Far

For years, climate activists have tried to use Congress to force their anti-energy agenda on the American people. They failed. Now, they are trying to weaponize state courts to bankrupt American energy producers instead.

A new report from the Washington Free Beacon details how Democrat-led states and cities are increasingly filing lawsuits seeking billions of dollars from oil and gas companies over alleged climate damages.

As the article notes:

“Through meritless lawsuits, they’re seeking to bankrupt our energy industry, kill good-paying jobs, and drive up the cost of electricity and gasoline for hardworking families,” Sen. Ted Cruz said.

That’s exactly what these lawsuits are about. These activist judges use politically motivated litigation to impose a radical climate agenda that could never survive through the democratic process.

Thankfully, Sen. Ted Cruz and Rep. Harriet Hageman are fighting back with the Stop Climate Shakedowns Act, legislation designed to stop states from abusing the legal system to target American energy producers.

America became an energy superpower because we unleashed innovation, production, and investment. Empowering activist lawyers to dictate national energy policy from local courtrooms would be a fatal mistake.

Congress should act before activist litigation does lasting damage to American energy dominance.
