EPA Restores Accountability to the Clean School Bus Program

Power The Future applauds today’s announcement from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) outlining a path forward to revamp the Clean School Bus (CSB) Program.

After years of mismanagement and one-size-fits-all mandates, EPA is taking concrete steps to strengthen oversight, expand fuel choice, and ensure better stewardship of taxpayer dollars.

As EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin stated:

“As was the case with so many of the Biden-era programs, the Clean School Bus program has been a disaster of poor management and wasteful spending of taxpayer dollars. At the Trump EPA, we have zero tolerance for reckless spending. Today, EPA takes the next step to set the program straight.”

That step includes issuing a Request for Information to evaluate a broader range of fuel options while pausing the 2024 rebate round to reassess the program ahead of 2026 grants.

Power The Future Executive Director Daniel Turner stated:

When it comes to transporting America’s schoolchildren, common sense should be in the driver’s seat, not the green agenda.”

This is exactly what responsible governance looks like.

Rather than doubling down on a program that sent billions of dollars toward largely electric bus mandates, despite delivery failures and manufacturer bankruptcies, EPA is prioritizing taxpayers.

At a time when families are already stretched by rising costs, every federal dollar must be carefully managed. We commend EPA for taking decisive action to improve oversight, restore consumer choice, and put American taxpayers first.
