FERC Proposal Will Speed Up Permitting For Natural Gas Pipeline Projects

The federal government may finally be taking steps to address one of the biggest obstacles to American energy development: permitting delays.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has proposed reforms to streamline approvals for natural gas pipeline projects, potentially speeding up projects that have long been delayed by regulatory bottlenecks. The proposal would broaden the types of projects eligible for blanket certificates, allowing certain interstate natural gas facilities to proceed without lengthy, case-by-case approvals from FERC.

The commission is also proposing higher cost limits for projects that qualify under blanket authorization and broader updates to reduce delays in pipeline construction and upgrades.

These changes matter. As the United States works to meet growing energy demand from manufacturing, AI data centers, and industrial expansion, building infrastructure faster is becoming increasingly important. Delays in pipeline and transmission projects can translate into higher costs, constrained energy supply, and reliability concerns for consumers.

Permitting reform is a key step in unleashing American energy. The ability to build pipelines and infrastructure quickly will impact America’s economic competitiveness for years to come.
