House Republicans Encourage the Trump Administration to Block Russia’s Energy Influence
A group of House Republicans is urging the Trump administration to make sure the United States controls the future of critical global energy assets.
Led by Congressman August Pfluger (TX-11), the letter to Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent advises that selling assets of Russian energy giant Lukoil presents a rare strategic opportunity. Western sanctions have forced Lukoil to consider selling parts of its international portfolio, which accounts for roughly two percent of global oil production. In the letter, the lawmakers warn that these resources should never return to Russian control and should instead be purchased by American energy companies.
This echoes the argument PTF Founder Daniel Turner recently wrote in RealClearEnergy,
“President Trump’s decision to sanction Lukoil was a bold step in the right direction. Now, policymakers must ensure the follow-through is just as strong. That means blocking speculative resales, closing every loophole, and prioritizing U.S. control and operation of these assets. Done right, this approach can weaken Russia’s war machine, stabilize global energy markets, and reinforce America’s role as the world’s most reliable energy leader.”
When opportunities arise to strengthen American energy leadership and weaken our adversaries, the United States must act decisively. Power The Future applauds Rep. Pfluger and his colleagues for recognizing this opportunity. Ensuring these assets are entrusted to American companies is exactly the kind of leadership needed to strengthen both our national security and energy dominance.
