New York Just Told the AI Economy to Build Somewhere Else

Governor Kathy Hochul says New York’s first-in-the-nation moratorium on large-scale data centers is about protecting consumers and the environment. In reality, it’s a policy that tells one of the world’s fastest-growing industries to invest elsewhere.

Data centers are the backbone of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and the modern economy. They attract billions in private investment, generate thousands of construction and permanent jobs, and strengthen the infrastructure America needs to compete with China in the AI race. Instead of establishing clear rules for responsible development, New York is slamming on the brakes.

The New York Post reports,

“But Hochul’s unilateral, election-year move accomplished a rare feat: uniting groups that are sharply divided over data centers in shared dislike for her solution. Business and tech groups warned the Democratic incumbent risked jeopardizing jobs and economic development, arguing companies will be forced to move data centers elsewhere — leaving New York in the dust as the AI industry expands. The Data Center Coalition argued the yearlong moratorium would “undermine New York’s economy and send a signal that the state is closed for business.”’

At a time when America should be increasing development, New York has decided to build less. The winners won’t be New Yorkers; it will be states like Texas, Virginia, and Georgia that attract investment with smart policies rather than political hurdles.
