Rep. Pfluger Backs the Stop Climate Shakedowns Act of 2026
Congressman August Pfluger (R-TX) is throwing his support behind Rep. Harriet Hageman’s (R-WY) fight to protect American energy producers from costly climate lawsuits.
In a new op-ed, Pfluger makes the case for Hageman’s Stop Climate Shakedowns Act of 2026, which he has co-sponsored to prevent states from using climate lawsuits and so-called “superfund” laws to punish energy companies for conduct that was legal and regulated at the time.
Hageman introduced the legislation to end a growing patchwork of state-level climate liability schemes and reaffirm federal authority over national energy policy. Pfluger’s op-ed underscores exactly why that effort is needed.
As Pfluger explains, the consequences of climate lawfare extend beyond energy producers. Oil and natural gas power manufacturing, agriculture, transportation, healthcare, and nearly every other sector of the economy. When activist politicians and lawyers impose billions of dollars in new liabilities on producers, those costs threaten investment, jobs, energy reliability, and, ultimately, American consumers.
Pfluger also points to the hypocrisy of states like Colorado and California, where leaders have spent years targeting traditional energy while confronting the very reliability and fuel-supply problems their policies helped create.
Hageman and Pfluger recognize a basic reality: America cannot punish the companies that power our economy and still expect affordable, reliable energy to continue uninterrupted.
