Usibelli Mine’s Impact Goes Way Beyond Jobs

June 28, 2019

Power The Future Executive Director Daniel Turner and I spent Thursday in both Fairbanks and Healy, Alaska.  In Fairbanks, we met with small business owners who depend on responsible oil and gas development on Alaska’s North Slope.  Their businesses – like hundreds of others across the state – look at Alaska’s resource prospects and are bullish on Alaska’s future. 110 miles down the road from Fairbanks is Healy, population just over 1000 people. The Usibelli Coal Mine employs 106 workers, with most living in and around Healy.  It was founded 76 years ago by Emil Usibelli, who ran the mine…

Alaska Forest Fires Fought Using Materials From Responsible Resource Extraction

June 25, 2019

Alaskans know that a typical summer involves beautiful weather, abundant fishing, majestic peaks and valleys to explore…and forest fires. Alaska experiences hundreds of forest fires statewide, burning hundreds of thousands of acres each year. These fires draw personnel from across the state, supported as needed by Lower-48-based crews.  Most rural villages have “hot shot” crews – men and women who work seasonally where needed to fight the fires. This year, the Swan Lake fire broke out on June 5th, after a lightning strike hit lands in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge.  The incident page notes that “the highest values at…

Alaska’s Workers Deserve A Voice

June 24, 2019

Alaska’s North Slope has been in “Renaissance mode” recently, with continued developmental breakthroughs from the Prudhoe Bay and Kuparuk legacy fields, to new fields coming online through the majors and smaller companies like ENI and Oil Search. While total production still hovers around 465,000 barrels per day from the Slope, the projects noted previously should push that number over 500,000 barrels soon. An article in the Fairbanks Daily News Miner this morning highlighted the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Land Management’s upcoming comment period (through July 22) pertaining to which lands should be available for oil leasing in the National…

Congressional House Dems (And A Few Republicans) Impose Their Will On Alaskans With ANWR Vote

June 21, 2019

On Thursday, the U.S. House voted overwhelmingly for an amendment to establish a provision in Section 118 of the Interior-Environment spending bill that effectively blocks the opening of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, if lease sales scheduled for late this year don’t generate at least $500 million in bids. The amendment, introduced by California liberal – and former National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) employee – Jared Huffman, would halt any further development, should the lease sales fall short of the set amount. What Huffman and the Democrats (along with four Republicans) fail to remember is that Alaskans – by over…

Alaska State Director to Kenai/Soldotna Chamber of Commerce: “Your Future is Bright, But Beware the Eco-Extremists”

June 19, 2019

On Wednesday, June 5th, Alaska State Director Rick Whitbeck was the keynote speaker at the joint Kenai/Soldotna Chamber of Commerce luncheon.  His talk was titled “Alaska’s Energy Workers and their Importance to Alaska’s Economy”. Being a “facts-over-feelings” presentation, the crowd of 50 or so people were given statistics to back up Whitbeck’s assertion that nearly half of all jobs in the private sector are directly or indirectly tied to the resource development industries in Alaska, and they were presented with a list of development opportunities that Power The Future sees as significant and important for Alaska’s energy workforce. From continued…

July 1st Is Last Chance To Comment On Pebble Mine Draft EIS

June 18, 2019

With the world seemingly succumbing to the Eco-Left’s ideology that renewable energy sources need to be prioritized moving forward, the issue of how to create enough storage capacity is becoming a high-priority discussion. Recently, Tesla noted that they may be facing significant shortages of copper, lithium and nickel for their electric vehicles. The U.S. Government listened to Tesla and others, and Alaska Senators Murkowski and Sullivan, along with West Virginia Senator Manchin and Arizona Senator McSalley introduced the “American Mineral Security Act”.  That act would, per the sponsor statement, ”facilitate the availability, development and environmentally responsible production of domestic resources…

As Eco-Extremists “Cork” Murkowski, They Hypocritically Disregard Fossil Fuel and Mined Product Usage and Increased Carbon Footprint

June 14, 2019

A recent article from Alaska Public Media focused on a new way anti-development zealots are targeting the proposed gold- and copper-rich Pebble deposit:  By mailing “corks” – used at tops of fishing nets for flotation – to the Senator’s Washington, D.C. office. The hypocrisy of the environmental movement has never been more evident than with this action. First of all, the corks are generally made from either Styrofoam or a combination of polymers, all of which are petroleum based, which require both mined materials and other fossil-fuel-based equipment to produce.  Nothing like protesting development of a resource by writing on…

AOGA Conference Recap: ANWR Lease Sale Still Scheduled For 2019

June 5, 2019

The Alaska Oil & Gas Association’s annual meeting, held Thursday, May 30th in Anchorage, was generally an upbeat affair. With information from industry executives and guest speakers filling the day, the conference’s theme, “Alaska: Back on the Map”, celebrated our state’s role in President Trump’s call for American energy dominance and independence. There was buzz around the Dena’ina Center when Lt. Governor Kevin Meyer announced that both BP and Exxon had committed $10 million each toward the Alaska Gasline project. There was buzz when U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski spoke about the role Alaska has in the national energy agenda, stating in a post-conference…

Joe Biden Targets Alaska In His Embrace Of The Green New Deal

June 4, 2019

When Joe Biden first announced his run for President, he did so with talking points that seemed to suggest he was going to go against the grain of the typical 2020 Democratic hopefuls and run to the middle. Of course, with far-left politicians like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and organizations such as the Sunrise Movement gaining prominence, it was only a matter of time before Biden’s views on energy and the environment would come to mirror theirs. And that’s exactly what happened. After AOC and others belittled Biden for his “middle of the road” approach on the environment, Biden moved left, announcing today…
