Trump Administration Approves Major Coal Expansion in Montana

The Biden-era war on coal is over. American energy is back.

On Tuesday, the Department of the Interior approved a major expansion of Montana’s Rosebud Mine, unlocking 33.75 million tons of federal coal and securing more than a decade of affordable, reliable energy for American homes and businesses. It’s a big win for Montana. It’s a big win for energy workers. And it’s a huge step forward for American energy dominance.

Located in Rosebud and Treasure Counties, the Rosebud Mine is a beating heart of coal-fired electricity generation in the region. Its expansion, now authorized through 2039, directly supports over 300 high-paying jobs, powers two major plants (Colstrip and Rosebud), and generates enough electricity to keep the lights on for over a million homes.

This is what leadership looks like.

Under President Trump, the federal government is no longer bowing to climate extremism or globalist pressure. Instead, it’s answering the call of working Americans, rural communities, and energy producers who want certainty, jobs, and a future.

As Acting Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management Adam Suess put it:

“By responsibly developing our domestic coal resources, we’re reducing reliance on foreign energy, strengthening national security and powering America’s future.”

This move also follows through on Trump’s Executive Orders 14241 and 14261, which are crucial directives aimed at increasing domestic mineral production and reviving America’s beautiful, clean coal industry. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum is putting those principles into action by focusing on three priorities that rural Americans know well: energy independence, rural prosperity, and permitting certainty.

Here’s the truth:

  • Coal isn’t going anywhere.
  • Energy dominance starts at home.
  • And when America builds, America wins.

Congratulations to the Rosebud Mine, to Montana, and to every energy worker whose future just got a little brighter.

Let’s keep digging. Let’s keep building. Let’s power the future.
