Trump EPA Moves to Roll Back Biden-Era Methane Regulations, Delivering Billions in Energy Savings

President Donald Trump and EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin are taking another major step toward unleashing American energy production by proposing to roll back burdensome Biden-era methane regulations on the oil and natural gas industry.

The Washington Free Beacon reports,

“Overall, Tuesday’s action removing methane regulations—which represents the latest major energy-related announcement Trump has made in the run-up to the upcoming midterm election—is projected to save Americans $45 billion in energy costs and lead to an extra 210 million barrels of oil and 1.41 trillion cubic feet of natural gas produced nationwide, a Trump EPA official briefed on the announcement told the Free Beacon.

Those are significant numbers: It is equivalent to about 10 days’ worth of oil consumption and 15 days of natural gas consumption in the United States. Oil fuels the nation’s planes, trucks, and cars while natural gas is by far the largest source of electricity generation in the country, according to federal data.”

The Biden-era regulations imposed costly restrictions on American energy producers, particularly smaller, low-producing wells. The Trump EPA’s proposal would ease those requirements, eliminate the controversial “Super Emitter Program,” and remove certain restrictions on routine natural gas flaring.

The announcement is especially significant for producers in Texas’s Permian Basin, one of America’s most productive oil and natural gas regions, where the Biden administration’s regulations reportedly reduced oil production by as much as 6 percent.

At a time when American families continue to face high electricity and gasoline prices, removing unnecessary regulatory barriers is critical to making energy more affordable and strengthening America’s energy security.
