PTF Letter to New Mexico Governor Lujan Grisham: Just Say “Thank You”

January 13, 2025

In just over a week, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) will deliver her 7th State of the State address, and this year, Power The Future is asking her to make one small change.  During her time in office, New Mexico’s state budget is up nearly 75 percent and will likely grow again this year. The Governor has enjoyed spending billions upon billions in new revenue delivered by New Mexico’s oil and natural gas workers. And not one time in her State of the State remarks has she ever expressed gratitude to New Mexico’s energy workers. This is just bad…

Oil and Gas Deliver Nearly $1 Billion in More Revenue for New Mexico

December 12, 2024

New Mexico’s state revenue continues to grow thanks to the oil and gas industry. The latest revenue numbers show an additional $892 million for New Mexico’s annual budget this year. The new revenue forecast predicts a budget of around $13.6 billion for the state, representing a nearly 75 percent increase since 2019. According to the Albuquerque Journal,  “The state is the second-largest oil producer in the nation — behind only Texas — and oil and gas revenue make up about 35% of the state’s total revenue collections, according to legislative data. In addition, two southeast New Mexico counties — Eddy and…

Energy is on the Ballot in New Mexico

November 4, 2024

Tomorrow, energy is on the ballot. No one understands this more than the tens of thousands of energy workers in New Mexico. On Thursday, President Trump visited the state as a reminder of what’s at stake in this election. The campaign stopped in Albuquerque, the second-largest oil producer in the United States. With energy revenue making up around 35 percent of the state budget, the issue is front and center for the Land of Enchantment.

New Mexico Senator Took Money From Both Sides of Failed Merger

October 16, 2024

Last week, it was reported that New Mexico Senator Martin Heinrich (D) took campaign donations from both sides of a failed New Mexico clean energy merger. In 2021, Sen. Heinrich wrote that the proposed merger between Avangrid and PNM would “financially benefit PNM customers” without disclosing that he took in $43,000 in campaign contributions from the companies before, during, and after the merger failed. The Washington Reporter writes, “Heinrich has in the past accepted tens of thousands of dollars from employees and PACs of both Avangrid and PNM Resources. Prior to publishing his op-ed, Heinrich received thousands of dollars from the Avangrid…

New Mexico Governor Jets Off to UN Climate Week

September 24, 2024

New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham is joining the likes of John Kerry with all the hypocritical travel. This week, Governor Lujan Grisham took the stage in New York City to participate in Climate Week 2024. There, she announced another executive order to “expedite New Mexico’s transition” away from energy sources that power the state. The Governor made the announcement in front of her climate group before revealing it to her constituents and celebrated “moonshot” spending initiatives but didn’t discuss how to fund them once her transition away from billions in revenue is complete. The Executive Order reads, “Gov. Lujan Grisham’s Executive Order will…

New Mexico’s Solar Boondoggle Gets Worse

September 4, 2024

Just last month we saw New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) announce another major solar project. Now, we have even more humbling news for Gov. Lujan Grisham’s solar project. Maxeon Solar has announced they expect sales in the third quarter of 2024 to “decline significantly” while their stock cratered to 9 cents per share. Bloomberg reports,  “Maxeon’s struggles come amid slowing demand for US rooftop solar installations. High interest rates have raised prices in that segment of the industry, a key market for Maxeon, which offers panels that typically have higher performance but are also more expensive. The company sells them at about…

New Mexico’s Governor Leaves Out Key Details In Latest Solar Announcement

August 8, 2024

Yesterday, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham announced another major solar project. The problem is she didn’t share the whole story. As her latest announcement arrives nearly one year to the day after her last major solar commitment, that is now missing deadlines and raising significant concerns. The Albuquerque Journal reported on Maxeon’s Solar Technologies failures in New Mexico this past May, “The company behind a more than billion dollar manufacturing project in Albuquerque is being investigated for violating federal securities laws, has seen a drop in stock value, delayed releasing its recent quarterly financial reports, and now has received a significant investment from a Chinese…

Analysts also reported the oil and gas industry is expected to deliver gains for nearly a decade.  Oil and gas revenue make up 35 percent of the state’s general fund and 37 percent of taxable property which goes to local governments. The Albuquerque Journal reports, “A new presentation from the Legislative Finance Committee reported a revenue of $15.2 billion from the extractive industry to New Mexico in fiscal year 2023. A flow chart from the LFC breaks down…
